On a silver arrowhead scalloped on each edge bearing the motto FLAME OF LIFE in maroon letters on the stock, a maroon cross surmounted by a silver torch enflamed yellow and entwined by a silver serpent. The insignia is 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height.
Maroon and white (silver) are the colors associated with Medical units. The arrowhead is suggestive of the tribes of Native Americans indigenous to North Dakota, home area also of the 818th Medical Battalion. The maroon cross is a traditional symbol for medical service. The torch is a symbol of knowledge and alludes to the units motto and the medical training necessary to maintain the quality of like as espoused by the motto. The serpent entwined on the torch refers to the staff of Aesculapius, a symbol identified with the healing arts.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 31 July 1984.
